Tutorials

First Welcome video below! (You can also watch all our videos on Youtube.)

This is just a quick ‘Hello’ video (to test YouTube) and to get something on the tutorial page of the blog! I’m sure the production techniques will get better, we’re still playing around with the camera. Anyway, more to follow very soon.

Amanda.

How to soak a block of Oasis. Basic, we know, but it would stagger you the amount of times we get asked this!

Another ‘easy’ one: How to fix a block of Oasis into a floristry container using pot tape.

A quick guide on the floristry tools that we sell both on our main website and on eBay.

How to prepare a posy arrangement using greenery prior to the flowers being added.

How to make a typical ‘chocolate box’ bow to add to any bouquet or arrangement.

How to fold and staple ribbon to make it pleated ready to pin to the edge of a funeral tribute.

How to pin your completed box pleated ribbon securely to the edge of a funeral tribute.

How to get a lovely straight point using pleated ribbon at the corner of a heart (but also good for corners on cushions, pillows etc.)

Thankyou for taking the time to show everyone some of the things that Florists want to keep a secret. I think it will be useful for a lot of people to start at the basics and work on from there.

If its possible sometime, could you please show how to start a shower bouquet.

Thanks for your comment Eileen, that’s certainly on the list of tutorials to do in the future.

    Hi,
I really like the tutorials, I do my son’s remembrance flowers, I like to do oasis hearts, could you please do some tutorials on this type of floristry as mine are very basic and I would like to vary them. Also coming up to christmas I like to do an open heart wreath with greenery and flowers for him, could this also be covered? Thankyou.

    Hi Rachel,
We’ve got some more tutorials ready for upload - again on some basic floristry techniques. We’ll be adding some more ‘practical floristry’ ones in the next few weeks aswell.

very helpful, thank you, tell me tho. do you soak the funeral oasis before or after the ribbon is attached, and how do you do it.

  • 9 admin // Sep 3, 2008 at 4:55 pm

Hi, The Oasis frame can be soaked using a watering can or other device. It’s ok to put the ribbon on prior to soaking - you may just need to wipe any excess water off.

not how i was taught to make a bow!!
    that`s the cheating way…

  • 11 admin // Sep 9, 2008 at 4:38 pm

    Hello Clarkey,
There are, of course several different ways of making a bow. As we go through literally thousands a year, that’s the way we make them for speed and for storage. We pre make them in quieter times and keep them flat until they are used. You may have learnt a ‘running bow’ - I’ll get one of our ‘older’ florists to demonstrate different ways of making a bow some time soon!
Anyway, real cheating would be using a pull up bow!
    Gareth.

I take great pleasure in stating that the video’s shown on your website has been both an eye opener to basic floristry and to see how easy it really is. After watching some of these i had managed to make my own funeral tribute for a friends funeral and they were amazed at how well it had turned out, I actually got asked at the funeral where I had purchased my arrangement from. Thank you again for these helpful tips

  • 18 Louise Bowles // Feb 19, 2009 at 12:51 am

Hi there i hope you dont mind my asking. I am wanting to make floral tributes for my nans funeral and i have purchased nan and mum tributes. I have seen how to start with the ribbon on your video’s and how to place flowers. I am wanting to put some sort of arrangement in the corner of each one and am wondering how to start them off and how not to make them look tacky and ruin them. Could you or anyone give any advice on small floral pieces to add to the mum and nan tributes. Kindest Regards Louise………P.S I DONT KNOW WHERE I WOULD OF BEEN WITHOUT YOUR VIDEO’S .

  • 19 admin // Feb 19, 2009 at 4:53 pm

    Hi Louise,
Some people use a product called a ‘join it’ which is basically a spring. You screw it into the place where you want to add the spray and then screw on a small piece of oasis which just raises it slightly from the base. Professionally, we don’t use them, as it’s just extra expense and time. If you want to see an example of a spray on a letter then have a look at this funeral letter on our website or these funeral images.
    Regards,
    Gareth, Rays Florist Ltd.
